News Wednesday — Wrong Number Saves the Day!

10 03 2010

Good afternoon readers! Today is News Wednesday, and I have a story for you. Ever have someone call you and it was a wrong number, or you yourself dial a wrong number? It has happened to each and every one of us. What if that wrong number helped save a life though. Check out the story below originally found here.

Astonishing Coincidence Saves Baby from Abortion in Indianapolis

Commentary by David Bereit, National Coordinator, 40 Days for Life

March 9, 2010

I know you’re familiar with the old saying, “God works in mysterious ways.” Please sit down and read this whole story. Our God of mystery has outdone Himself this time!

A young woman in Indianapolis, Indiana — we’ll call her Erin — woke up, saw her kids off to school, dropped her preschoolers at a friend’s house … and noticed that she was late for an appointment …

… at Planned Parenthood …

… for an abortion.

So Erin picked up her phone and called to see if could still come in. She thought she was calling Planned Parenthood. In her haste, she dialed a wrong number.

Instead of Planned Parenthood, she got Joseph … who was answering the cell phone that’s being used by …

… get ready for this now …

… 40 Days for Life in Indianapolis!!!

Joseph took a deep breath and tried to be as calm as possible. He took Erin’s name and number and simply said that a counselor would call her back.

So Elizabeth, the counselor, called Erin. Elizabeth begged her not to hang up, and then explained that she had not reached Planned Parenthood. Asked if she was a Christian, Erin said “yes.” So Elizabeth told her that God’s grace was at work in this “wrong number” situation.

So what had led Erin to the abortion center? Simply put — desperation. She has four children, their father is in jail, she had lost her job, her electricity is about to be shut off, and she doesn’t have enough money to pay the rent.

Later, Erin arrived at Planned Parenthood with her aunt. The aunt told counselors she opposed the abortion, but Erin’s mother and sister insist it’s the best answer. They say Erin just can’t handle another child.

In the meantime, Elizabeth had spread the word about Erin’s situation. A volunteer offered to pay her electric bill. Ten others pooled their cash to pay her rent.

Eileen in Indianapolis says a local group is now working with Erin to help her find a job. “She has a lot of potential,” Eileen said, “but needs support since her mother and sister are still encouraging her to abort the baby.”

Erin has reacted with both joy and disbelief that strangers were helping her. She has called Planned Parenthood to cancel her appointment and request a refund.

Please keep Erin and her family — and all those helping her — in your prayers.

So, you see? God DOES work in mysterious ways. There are no coincidences … and in this case, no wrong numbers!

So readers, was this an act of God or what? Have you ever experienced an event like this in your life?

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Tech. Tuesday — The Bible and the Iphone

9 03 2010

Good afternoon readers! Sorry about the late post, but it is Tech. Tuesday! Today we are going to look at the Bible and the Iphone. Ever since the Iphone came out, it has been considered the best  “smartphone” technology, and continues to be the best according to consumers. Several thousand applications have been developed to be used on the phone and itouch devices.

One of the most important applications I have on my phone is the Bible. Several different applications have been made for the Bible, but I use the application created by the folks over at YouVersion.com.

It gives you the capability to view many translations, see what others think about a verse, read a Bible plan, etc.; all from your phone screen. How cool is that?

So readers, do you think that the Bible applications are a necessity for a “smartphone” user? If you do, what application do you have? If not, why not?

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Music Monday — Radio and You

8 03 2010

Good afternoon readers! Today is Music Monday! What radio station do you listen to? What genre of music do you enjoy the most?

I have been asked these questions over the last week, so I thought I would make this a blog post for Music Monday.

Currently, I am tuned into Air 1. Here in Oklahoma City, it is 90.9, but it is broadcast in over 200 stations in North America, and online at Air1.com. If you aren’t familiar with Air 1, it is a Christian radio station that plays more Christian rock than any other form of Christian music.

Now when it comes to the genre of music that I like the most, I really don’t have one particular one. I like all sorts of music, and have a pretty big collection that contains a wide variety.

So readers, what do you like? What radio station is currently playing in your car?

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Movie Saturday– The Human Experience

6 03 2010

Good morning everyone! Today is great for Movie Saturday! We will be looking at a movie entitled The Human Experience. It is set to hit theaters April 9, 2010, and looks like a great film to see. Below is the synopsis from the movies website.

From Grassroots Films of Brooklyn, New York comes THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE – the story of a band of brothers who travel the world in search of the answers to the burning questions: Who am I? Who is Man? Why do we search for meaning? Their journey brings them into the middle of the lives of the homeless on the streets of New York City, the orphans and disabled children of Peru, and the abandoned lepers in the forests of Ghana, Africa. What the young men discover changes them forever. Through one on one interviews and real life encounters, the brothers are awakened to the beauty of the human person and the resilience of the human spirit.

—–

So readers, What is the meaning of life? Who are We? These are great questions to ask, and are asked by both Christians and the non-believer. All I can really say about this is that I believe these questions can be answered. The answers can be found in Christ Jesus!

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Feature Friday — Facebook Fan Pages for Pastors

5 03 2010

Good afternoon readers! Today is Feature Friday! Today we are going to be featuring a post from a blog I read called Stuff Christian Culture Likes . It is by Stephanie Drury. Below is one of her recent posts.

#132 Facebook fan pages for pastors

Thursday February 25, 2010

What more relevant way to encourage and shepherd your flock than via fan page? Lots of these exist on Facebook. They are created either by members of their church or by the pastor himself masquerading as a member of the church.

Since there isn’t a Facebook fan page category for pastors, the fanatic-inspiring pastor is sometimes categorized as a ”musician.” No one raises an eyebrow. Fan page? Sure. Musician? Why not? He’s a man of God!

Some of these pages have tens of thousands of fans. Said fans use the page to leave copious messages and pressing questions that the pastor could never respond to due to his mortaldom. But maybe they don’t see him as a mere mortal. Maybe once he’s fan-page-worthy he’s approaching the realm of exalted figurehead. This sort of mindset turns the pastor into an untouchable celebrity rather than a friend and companion in seeking God. Hi, conflict of interests.

——-

So what do you think readers? Should pastors have “Fan Pages”? Does this make it out to have them be some sort of idol? Is it taking away from what the pastor is all about?

Go check Stephanie’s blog! I am sure you will get a kick out of it.

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Scripture Thursday — Luke 10:27

4 03 2010

Good morning everyone! This day has been blessed by God. How are you using this day to bless others? Today is Scripture Thursday, and we will be looking at Luke 10:27.

Last night, my wife and I during our marriage class at church were given this verse to help us write our family’s purpose statement. I wanted to share with you this verse because it should be a part of everyone’s live; not just those who are married.

Luke 10:27 (NLT)

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” And, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

As always on Scripture Thursday, let’s look at what other translations have to say.

(ASV) “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.”

(The Message) “That you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence—and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.”

(KJV) “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”

————–

So what does this mean to you?

I think that no matter what, we should love God with every fiber of our being. With that, we should love other people as our self. God loves us no unconditionally, and if we show that love to others, maybe it will rub off. Showing that love to others, lets others see God in us.

Until next time readers, God Bless!

News Wednesday — Marriage and Reality TV

3 03 2010

Hello readers. It is News Wednesday, and today we will be looking at marriage and reality tv.

As a lot of you may know by now, The Bachelor picked Vienna to be his bride. Many of you are disappointed in his decision as well.

I am not a fan of the show, and really don’t care to watch it. I don’t watch The Bachelorette either. These shows, and similar ones ,are really destroying the idea and sanctity of marriage. Several women/men vying for the love of one person, and that one person “dating” all of them at once is not how God designed the process of marriage.

In today’s society, marriage is being treated like a game, when really it shouldn’t be. Divorce isn’t looked upon as something bad anymore. In my opinion, divorce is a crutch, a cop-out, a white-out pen, etc. The marriage vows aren’t taken seriously anymore.

When two people (one man and one woman) are married, it should be forever no matter what happens.

So how as a society do we fix the divorce rate? I really don’t have that answer, but for a relationship and marriage to be healthy, God must be the center.

What are your thoughts on marriage and reality tv? How important is marriage to you and your future life?

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Tech. Tuesday! Social Networking for Christians

2 03 2010

Hello again readers. Today is a beautiful day! It is Tech. Tuesday, and we will be looking a Social Networking for Christians.

Facebook, by far is considered one of the biggest social networking websites out there. It boasts the following statistics on its’ site.

  • More than 400 million active users
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • More than 35 million users update their status each day
  • More than 60 million status updates posted each day
  • More than 3 billion photos uploaded to the site each month
  • More than 5 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each week
  • More than 3.5 million events created each month
  • More than 3 million active Pages on Facebook
  • More than 1.5 million local businesses have active Pages on Facebook
  • More than 20 million people become fans of Pages each day
  • Pages have created more than 5.3 billion fans

Myspace is another social networking website as well that boasts similar numbers.

Now you may have seen the controversy surrounding both these websites. They include stories such as missing teenagers, sexual predators, etc. So how do we keep kids safe?

  1. Privacy Controls are the biggest thing
  2. Monitor Their Activity
  3. I suggest Christian alternatives

Below are a view ideas of Christian alternatives. Now I know they aren’t as popular as the above mentioned, but they are cool.

Tangle is an awesome Christian website. It combines the ideas of Youtube, Facebook and Myspace. It also gives a little more than that. He is some information I found on their site.

The vision of tangle is to be a place where members can come together to connect, share, and grow together in faith and life. How can users do this? tangle users can connect with each other by creating and joining group pages for their churches, bands, ministries and shared interests. tangle users can share their lives, thoughts, and passions through videos, photos, and blogs. Finally, tangle users can use the website’s unique tools such as the Online Bible and the Prayer Wall to grow in faith in Christ while being in fellowship with Christians from all over the world.

Shoutlife is another great Christian oriented alternative to Facebook or Myspace. Here is some information I found on their site.

ShoutLife.com is a free community / social networking website that offers customized profiles with unlimited photos, networks, events, private/instant messaging, blogging and more. We are unique in that our community is safe and clean, yet is still feature rich. We focus on creating and promoting a fun and positive environment. At ShoutLife.com, you can connect with your friends and meet new people as well as amazing music artists, authors, comedians, organizations and more.

So readers, what are your thoughts? Are these websites a good idea?

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Music Monday — Music, Poetry, and Comedy!

1 03 2010

Good morning readers! It is Monday, and you know what that means.. Music Monday!! This morning we are going to look at one of my all-time favorite guys in the world, Bradley Hathaway. He wrote a book called All The Hits So Far, Don’t Expect Much More: Poetry, Prose & Other Sundry Items . It is a collection of his poetry. But why it is going into a post for Music Monday, you ask. Well The book contains a CD of his poems. Some of them are put to music. Also he has other albums that are songs as well.

The way he uses his words are absolutely brilliant! He turns funny things into Christian messages, and I just love him for that. I had a chance to see him live a few years back, and actually get to meet him. He is the nicest guy in the world. Below is a clip of a poem from his book called Manly Man . Enjoy!

So, do you have any types of media other than the Bible that speaks to you in the Christian sense?

Until next time readers, God Bless!
