What Christmas Shouldn’t Be

22 12 2010

Good EARLY morning readers. Was was up, so I thought I would post a blog. Christmas is three days away. Can you believe it?

I am re-posting a blog from last year for today’s post. I hope you don’t mind. I think it is still significant, so I wanted to hit on it again.

This was originally posted in a blog entry called Commercializing Christmas. I hope you enjoy. I would like to know your thoughts if you would like to give them.

————————————–

More and more each year, I see the world, specifically the United States, forgetting the true meaning of Christmas. I don’t know when the commercializing of Christmas really began, but as an adult I am able to open my eyes to it more than a small child.

Christmas shopping for some of us is a year round activity. We focus on what we are going to get one another throughout the whole year. Some people’s Christmas shopping begins the day after Thanksgiving on Black Friday. Commercializing Christmas has gotten so bad, that it even takes over the holiday of Thanksgiving all together. I first hand have seen people camping out at large retailers during their Thanksgiving holiday just to get the latest gadget for Christmas.

Also, have you ever noticed how people’s attitude changes during the Christmas season? People or more in a hurry, and seem to be more rude this time of year. People seem to want to give more to others in need. Most of the time I believe it is out of guilt, instead of out of wanting to actually help.

Oh, and another thing. People and businesses are more inclined to say Happy Holidays, instead of Merry Christmas in hopes that they don’t get sued. Yes I understand that it may be the ” politically correct ” thing to say, but I believe this contributes to the loss of the real meaning of Christmas.

———————–

All this post is really meant to do is to open your eyes up to the true meaning of Christmas. It is to celebrate the life of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is also a time to spend time with family and create memories that will last for eternity.

So during this Christmas, remember what you are celebrating.

“ Without the birth of Christ, there would be no Christmas. Without Christmas, there wouldn’t be a Christmas break, and winter would be really boring.— Shannon Fouts, wife of Pastor Rodney Fouts.

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Gleeful Christmas

7 12 2010

Good evening everyone! I hope everyone is doing well.

Well it is the Christmas season! Is everyone excited? I know I am! Christmas is fast approaching, and that means.. Christmas SPECIALS!!

Tonight is the Christmas episode of Glee. I know some of my readers don’t like Glee. I understand that, but I think it is a fun show. I know that it is full of sin, but it reminds me of my fun choir days back in middle school.

Anyway.. I know that Glee has done a religious show in the past and really didn’t show what Christianity is all about. Being that tonight is the Christmas episode, do you think that they will show the TRUE meaning of Christmas?

I will like to know what everyone thinks.

***EDIT***

After watching tonight’s episode, I think they did an amazing job. Christmas is more about just the presents. Glee was great tonight!

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Everyday Jesus

9 04 2010

Good afternoon readers. I hope your day is going great!

Today, exactly one week has passed since Good Friday. It is exactly one week since the time Jesus was crucified.

Easter is a very significant holiday for Christians. It celebrates what Jesus did for us. But why can’t we celebrate that all year round?

Our lives are so busy in this fast-paced world of technology that we often put Jesus and our spiritual lives aside. For most of us, our spiritual lives are only brought out on Sundays. For some of us, it isn’t even brought out at all.

I myself struggle with connecting with my Heavenly Father on a daily basis. I guess what I am trying to say is that, for what Jesus has done for us, we shouldn’t put Him on a back burner. The thought of Jesus dying on the cross, raising from the dead, and ascending into heaven should always be floating around in our mind.

So readers, I ask you the following:

Is Jesus and His life only something you think about twice a year?

Are you living everyday to the fullest and celebrating the life that Jesus has given you in Him?

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Merry Christmas Eve

24 12 2009

I am writing this while my wife and I are driving to Texas to see family. It has been crazy with all the wind and snow. Sitting here in the passenger seat isn’t my cup of tea when the conditions are like this and I don’t have control over the vehicle I am in. So I apologize to my wife for being the “driving instructor.”

Anyway readers, I wish you all a very safe and Merry Christmas. God Bless you all. See you in a few days.

The True Meaning of Christmas

23 12 2009

Yesterday I gave you a run down of  my Top Ten Christmas Movies/TV Specials. I picked “A Charlie Brown Christmas” as my number one pick. This kind of ties into my post about Commercializing Christmas as well.

See Charlie Brown during this movie is down and out about how commercialism is ruining his Christmas. I really do think that Linus points out the real reason for Christmas well:

Luke 2:8-14 (King James Version)

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Until next time readers, God Bless!

Top Ten Christmas Movies/TV Specials

22 12 2009

As Christmas approaches, I wanted to do something fun for you readers. Below are my Top Ten Christmas Movies/TV Specials. This is strictly by opinion and memories that have come from watching them.

10: Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. This is a great Jim Henson movie that came out on TV in the late 70′s/early 80′s. Emmet Otter and his Ma are dirt-poor, but very happy and good singers. But as Christmas is around the corner, both of them want to get something special for each other. And the talent show prize is $50! So, Ma gets a song ready, and Emmet forms a jug-band with his friends. But the Riverbottom Gang, a bunch of rich kids with killer electric band equipment are going to be tough competition.

9: A Muppet Family Christmas. Keeping with the Muppets, this movie came out on TV in 1987. When Fozzie and the Muppet Show gang drop in unexpectedly on Fozzie’s mother, she is forced to cancel her winter vacation plans and entertain them all. Soon the Sesame Street gang comes by as carolers, and then Kermit and his nephew Robin discover a Fraggle Rock hole in the basement. A snow storm blows in, stranding everyone at the house, except for Miss Piggy, who arrives just in time for all the Muppets to celebrate Christmas together.

8: Ernest Saves Christmas. I used to watch is classic Ernest movie back when it was released in 1988. It was a tradition during my childhood for me to watch this movie. Ernest P. Worell, a sweet but silly taxi driver who at times suffers delusions of grandeur, has just chauffeured a rather extraordinary fare: “His Great Red Oneness, the Claus” himself. It seems Santa hasn’t got the magic for another Christmas season, and has come to Orlando, Florida for Joe Carruthers, the man he has chosen as his successor. But things quickly begin to unravel, thanks to Joe’s meddling agent and Santa’s increasingly unreliable memory. Incredibly, dimwitted Ernest soon becomes Santa’s only hope! Joining forces with a young runaway named “Harmony Star”, Ernest rushes to save the holidays as we know them.

7: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. This movie hit TV back in 1964 and has been a staple of Christmas specials since then. My favorite characters have to be the elf that wants to be a dentist and the prospector.Sam the snowman tells us the story of a young red-nosed reindeer who, after being ousted from the reindeer games because of his beaming honker, teams up with Hermey, an elf who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, the prospector. They run into the Abominable Snowman and find a whole island of misfit toys. Rudolph vows to see if he can get Santa to help the toys, and he goes back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. But Santa’s sleigh is fogged in. But when Santa looks over Rudolph, he gets a very bright idea.

6: A Christmas Story. Even though most people despise this movie, I love it. It came out in 1983 and has some very funny scenes. It’s Christmas time and there’s only one thing on Ralphie Parker’s Christmas list this year: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot, Range Model Air Rifle, but many obstacles stand in the way of his dream because every adult that he confronts keeps telling him he’ll shoot his eye out. Meanwhile The Old Man just got a major award (a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg), and Mom is making sure The Old Man doesn’t come near her turkey, Ralphie’s friend gets his tongue stuck to a flag pole, and Ralphie utters the f-word infront of his father. Christmas is drawing nearer and Ralphie visits Santa at the department store in hopes of asking him for his dream gift. Will he receive it? Let’s hope so.

5: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This TV movie came out in 1983, a family favorite. We pretty much watched it every year. It gives me memories of when I was in Christmas pageants. This is a made for tv adaptation of Barbara Robinson’s novel The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Loretta Swit of M*A*S*H stars as Grace Bradley who inherits the job of running her church’s Christmas pageant when the woman who usually does it breaks her leg tripping over the extremely long wire she has on her telephone. Not only does Grace inherit this disaster it gets worse when the Herdman kids – all six of them. The Herdmans are notorious for abusing each other and stealing from and abusing other kids as well. They smoke, steal, lie, bully and generally create havoc in their town.Their father disappeared years earlier and mother works two shifts at the shoe factory to support herself and the kids while the kids run wild. But this WILL be the best Christmas pageant ever when the Herdman kids learn the Christmas story and about the true meaning of Christmas.

4: Elf. Stepping into the 21st century here, Will Ferrell is hilarious in this movie. For the longest time, this really wasn’t a hit for me, but it grows on me each year. Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa’s sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult human who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. Hobbs, on Santa’s naughty list for being a heartless jerk, had no idea that Buddy was even born. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City (and human culture) as only an elf can. When Walter’s relationship with Buddy interferes with his job, he is forced to reevaluate his priorities.

3. Xmas Vacation. 1989 Classic. Chevy Chase. Christmas. National Lampoon’s. Enough said..It’s Christmas time and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration, but things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen and their two kids. Clark’s continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests, but he manages to keep going knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon.

2: Home Alone. This is a movie I used to be able to quote each line to I watched it so much. It came out in 1990 and is definitely a must see! In this film, Kevin McAllister is an eight year old boy left at home by his parents, when they leave with the rest of the family for Christmas holidays to Paris. At first he seems to enjoy living alone, but after a while he understands that things aren’t so easy. Especially when two robbers decide to break in a particular house. HIS house! Is he able to defend his home?

1: A Charlie Brown Christmas. Stepping back to 1965, this movie first hit the hearts of many on TV. You can’t go wrong with a Charlie Brown holiday special. When Charlie Brown complains about the overwhelming materialism that he sees amongst everyone during the Christmas season, Lucy suggests that he become director of the school Christmas paegent. Charlie Brown accepts, but it proves to be a frustrating struggle. When an attempt to restore the proper spirit with a forlorn little fir Christmas tree fails, he needs Linus’ help to learn what the real meaning of Christmas is.

So what are your favorite Christmas movies/TV specials?
